When Herbert Archer and Herbert Holland opened Archer & Holland on the corner of King William and Hindley Street in 1918, they never could have imagined they had built a family legacy lasting over a century.
After relocating to three different locations in the Adelaide CBD, our family owned and run store finally settled at City Cross where it underwent a complete makeover in August 2022.
From an extended entryway of terrazzo tiles and gold brass lettering of the new A&H signage, to glossed glass windows and mahogany panelling frames, our store has been zhuzhed up with a nod to our family’s history, of course.
Our brand new feature wall exhibits a photo of the first Archer & Holland store from 1923. The image showcases the old Adelaide tramways along King William Street that would advertise A&H in the 40s, making us the first private business to advertise on an Adelaide tram!
Today the family business shines under Herbert Holland’s grandson, Bill and Meredith.
Bill has been Archer & Holland’s Master of Fine jewellery for over 50 years, offering expert advice, valuations, and repair and remodelling services onsite from the underground workspace at our City Cross store.
But in March 2020 when the world was hit with the COVID 19 pandemic, the fate of Archer & Holland was uncertain.
“We are one of the lucky few SA small businesses that were able to experience COVID as beneficial to our business,” Bill and Meredith’s daughter and A&H bubbly sales consultant, Kate Whiting-Cole says.
“More and more people began shopping online and investing in jewellery. It saved our business,” she says.
Kate says she is so proud of her family’s business and that the recent renovations are a reminder of how far the family business have come since their first store.
